Rich Heritage of Bengali Music

Bengali music took its birth in the region of South Asia, a portion of which is now known as West Bengal. This Indian state is known for its scenic beauty of flowing waters, clear sky, and nature's splendor. The true magnificence of these beautiful natural wonders is reflected in the music born in this region.
The earliest of Bengali music is believed to be originated thousand years ago with the introduction of oldest specimen of Bengali literature, Charjapad. In the olden days, several verses from this specimen were sung beautifully in various rhythmic beats and musical forms. These songs were narrative of beliefs and religion followed in the states inclusive of cultural, traditional, philosophical, and spiritual.
Later on, as years passed and Bengali literature started advancing with new verses, new beliefs, and new poems, and new songs as well. A rich tapestry of music was then introduced ranging from folk melody to the present day hip hop music. In between various forms like baul, kirtan, lyrical boatmen, and urban music were also introduced as a part of rich Bengali musical culture.
The rich heritage of Bengali music comprises two main categories namely, folk music and urban music. Most prominent musical instruments used in the formation of this music are chordophones, guitar, violin, idiophones, gong, ankle bells, and harmonium. The genre has a huge collection of hot numbers some of which are known by the name of notable figures in the industry like Ali Akbar, Radhika Mohan Maitra, Ravi Shankar, D.T Joshi, and Vilayat Khan.
There are no clear evidences of Bengali folk music but the basic component of this music is the spiritual thought and belief. The songs ranging in the genre are enriched with high literary words, imagery, musical texture, rhythmic beats, and philosophical beliefs.
Bengali folk types are divided into Baul and kirtan forms of music. Baul is a kind of music that delivers all kind of mysterious values and beliefs in a characteristic rhythmic pattern whereas the kirtan form of music is the kind that narrates the divine love relationship between Lord Krishna and Radha.
Furthermore, the urban kind of music is almost 200 years ago some of which are based on the Hindustani classical music that has an age old tradition. The present day urban songs are rich in lyrics and are enriched with heart warming beats.
